The Story of Martyrdom:

In Basem Na`im Street in the town of Bayt Hanun — north of Gaza Strip, the atmosphere of war was so calm. The people there stayed at their homes and no one could dare to come out with the beginning of wartime on the 27th of December except those who are forced. They went out to meet the needs of their families of food, and sometimes they go out to escape the guns of the tanks, missiles, and the Israeli warplanes. A third group makes up their minds to stay in the houses in disobedience to the occupation forces, and rejecting the flashback of 48 invasion to the Arab lands that the fathers and the ancestors lived. Samih Al Kafarnah was one of those who remained in their homes until the 5th of January (the beginning of the land invasion). He went out to help his neighbor Muhammad Akram Abu Harbid whom was a target to the reconnaissance warplanes, but the shrapnel hit him in the back and he fell on the ground covered in blood.

Ahmad Samih Al Kafarnah (19 years old) was about to help the injured families and friends, but he was stunned when he saw his father injured before his eyes. He carried it to the nearest car to take him to hospital. While he was helping his father, the Israeli reconnaissance warplanes that filled the sky of Gaza targeted him with another missile. He was pulling the body of his father inside the house when he fell as a martyr on the body of his father.

His father who was injured before him is still alive after he had been transferred to hospitals outside Gaza Strip because of his critical conditions. Until now, he did not know that Ahmad was the cause of saving his life. `Adnan, the younger brother of Ahmad, says: “Pains and sorrow will come back again and we will remember Ahmad forever.” He did not forget him despite the passage of many months; how he could forget his brother, friend, and his football coach.” `Adnan says: "Before the war, he was teaching me how to play football in order to be a strong scorer and we enjoyed a long with playing. Ahmad was closer to me than my eyelash, and closer to my heart than the jugular vein. I do not know why the warplanes targeted him! Was it because he tried to save his father and his neighbor? I miss him so much."

No one knew Ahmad but wished to have him as a son because of his good morals, manners, and commitment. He loved all the people and they loved him and always remembered him. His mother misses his kisses that he used to place on her forehead every morning seeking her pleasure to please his Lord. His nephews: Mahmoud, Muhammad, and Ahmad miss his compassion and his unlimited tender for them. He always filled his pockets with candy to distribute on them with a kiss and a smile that give joy to their hearts. Now, they miss those beautiful habits that used to help them to forget the pains of separation.

His mother whose heart was full of grief did not stop shedding tears for him because he was her elder child. She wished to be happy for his success after he would finish the university, but she could not. The wife of his brother says about his relation with his mother: "It was so special relation as he was the kindest of her children and the closest to her heart. He used not to go out but after taking her permission and telling her his destination and the when he will be back. He would not move a step toward the door but on the echo of her satisfactory words coming out of her mouth. He did not leave the house but after he hears good words, and supplications for success. He always said to her: “O Mum, be pleased with me.” How obedient he was to his mother and who could forget such a pious person like him? The wife of his brother says about the day before his martyrdom: “He went out urgently to a near place. He looked for her to hear her nice words and supplications, but he could not find her. He had to go out without her permission, therefore her heart was on fire for fear on him, especially, the shelling was still heavy at that time. When he came back, he came to her seeking her forgiveness, kissed her hands, and promised her not to repeat it again, so she forgave him, but this time was the last because he never came back. He was killed in cold blood by the Israeli forces."
