Visit the 3D Museum

The Palestinian Holocaust Memorial Museum (PHMM) is also featured on the virtual world of Second Life. Second Life is a 3D virtual world created by its Residents. It is similar to a website, but the only difference is it is primarily based on graphics rather than text.

In this manner, you can actually "build" 3D structures inside Second Life. This makes communicating a message much more powerful and engaging than on websites due to the added levels of interactivity and communication.

You interact with this world through a representation of yourself that you choose, which is called your “avatar.”

To this effect, we have created the PHMM in Second Life, making use of all the extra functionalities offered by the virtual setting.

To access the museum, you need to subscribe to Second Life and download a small program that is your portal to the virtual world.

To do this, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to www.secondlife.com. This is the website for the virtual world. Once there, click on the button in the top-right of the screen that says “Get Started”
  2. You will be taken to a screen that asks you to fill some details to create your account. Follow the steps on the website to choose a name and an avatar. Don’t worry if you don’t like the look of your avatar, you can change that anytime from inside Second Life.
  3. Once all the steps are complete, you will receive an email to confirm your email address.
  4. Finally, you will be prompted to download the viewer, which is the Second Life program that you use to interact with the world. The program is 35MBs and on a broadband connection should take less than 10 minutes to download.
  5. Once the download is complete, install the program on your computer. Now you are ready to enter Second Life!
  6. Once you start the application up, you will be prompted to enter your username and password.
  7. Once inside, you will find yourself in a place called “Help Island.” Here you can learn the basics of how to interact with the world of Second Life.
  8. After that, you can visit the museum by searching for “Palestinian Holocaust.” The search button is located at the bottom of your screen.
  9. Alternatively, you can visit the museum by just opening this url in your browser: http://www.tinyurl.com/SL-PHMM. This will take you to a website that will prompt you to “teleport” to this location.
